When you are a mulch supplier and you want to provide your customers with the best mulch colorant out there, it’s natural to have questions. Below are eight of the most frequently asked questions about T.H. Glennon and the products we offer.

frequently asked questions

1. Why use colored mulch?

The rich colors of enhanced mulch add beauty to your landscape designs; they provide that extra little decorative pop that compliments existing plants and home architecture. Additionally, it helps to retain moisture for plants while supporting environmentally friendly recycling of tree and rubber based products.

2. Are Colorfast Colorants environmentally safe?

One of the reasons we got into this business was to create an environmentally sustainable product that enhances landscaping design. That’s why T.H. Glennon uses only environmentally safe colorants.

3. What effect does colored mulch have on plants?

Using colored mulch actually aids in your plants’ growth and health. During colder months, it helps protect sensitive plants and aids in retaining moisture. Colored mulch also does a much better job preventing weed growth than traditional mulch.

Colored mulch is known to break down at a much slower rate than all-natural mulch—this offers the side benefit of more time between replenishings—which means it doesn’t use the nitrogen that wood does during its more rapid breakdown.

4. How much colored mulch should I use in my plant beds?

Generally, we recommend that property owners lay down a 4-inch layer of mulch for the first time. As this mulch settles and spreads out, you should get a nice, compact layer of 2 to 3 inches about a month after installation. Each year, the mulch bed should be raked and topped with about 2 inches of new mulch.

5. When should I spread colored mulch?

Due to stockpiling, the mulch you receive may not be completely dry. To prevent colorant from washing off, it is best to spread enhanced colored mulch when rain is not imminent. When correctly applied and allowed to dry completely, your new landscape design will stay looking beautiful.

6. Do the colors ever wash off the mulch?

To ensure that your new mulch maintains its rich color, we recommend spreading mulch on a dry day and avoiding walking across it or otherwise letting any family members or pets come into contact with it until it has properly settled and dried. Dyed mulch generally retains that bright, beautiful appearance for one to three seasons, depending upon environmental factors like rainfall and the amount of direct sunlight. Periodically using a rake or cultivator to loosen it up will help keep it colorful longer.

7. What’s the most popular color?

Presently, black and browns are the most popular colors that we are seeing across the country. This is generally because people still love the look of traditional wood mulch, but hate how fast it degrades and looks old. Black and brown mulch offer a nice, neutral backdrop without looking washed out. We have also seen the popularity of red mulch increase, due to the way it offsets many types of flowering plants.

8. Are there color trends, like in the fashion industry?

Mulch colors do change like fashions, and our local landscapers have a lot to do with this. Think about it—they are loading up their trucks with one color of mulch and it is being spread throughout the neighborhood. Once one neighbor sees how great the colored mulch next door looks, they want it too. And every year, colors change a bit and the trend comes in early spring. You will also see different colors being popular in different regions based on the type of plant life there.
